Swimming in Nebraska was made during a residency with the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Many people asked me why I would go there, to a place where most Americans - especially those who imagine themselves cultured and sophisticated - think there is "nothing." I meant to make a kind of critique of that way of thinking, though it seems when it was finished it became something else - less a critique, and more a celebration of people, ideas, a place, and this world, where ever one is. Perhaps it is a prayer for someone like me, a prayerless person.
